We were allowed to sleep in today in hopes of quenching the last bit of jet lag with a late, leisurely Greek breakfast. As I write this, I feel the overcast sun warming the bricks beneath my feet and can smell the ginger tea steaming on my right.
Today was packed so full of activity, it’s hard to remember how it all started only a few hours ago. We left our hotel by the sea at 8:30 and arrived at ancient Corinth by 11.
We awoke this morning and discovered the landscape that had been hidden when we arrived by the cover of night: the horizon sculpted by shrub-dotted mountains, ascending olive groves growing out of fields of yellow wildflowers. The air is warm, crisp, and smells like peppered olive oil. After the stale air and cramped seats during our flights and bus rides, this morning felt like heaven.
The Athens 2017 team has gathered from all corners of campus and are en route to the Chicago airport. As we finally focus on the trip ahead of us, and wave good many of our group are sobered at the responsibilities we’ve been given.
